The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday afternoon upgraded Mumbai to an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall along with strong winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Earlier in the day, the weather bureau had placed the city under a yellow alert.
For Friday, the IMD has downgraded Mumbai to a yellow alert, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places.
According to the weather department, Mumbai is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on Thursday under the orange alert.
Mumbai's neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar have been placed under a red alert for Thursday. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations. Both districts are also expected to witness strong winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph.
The alert level for Thane and Palghar has been lowered to an orange alert for Friday.
Raigad will remain under an orange alert on both Thursday and Friday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at a few places along with strong winds.
The other Konkan districts - Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg - have been placed under orange and yellow alerts, respectively.
The IMD has also warned of intense rainfall over the Western Ghats. The Ghats of Nashik and Pune have been placed under a red alert, with extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated places, while the Ghats of Satara and Kolhapur are under an orange alert.
Several districts in North Maharashtra, including Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Ahilyanagar, are under orange and yellow alerts on Thursday, with heavy rainfall at isolated places and strong winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph.
Pune district and most of the Vidarbha region, including Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Wardha, Washim, Nagpur, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, have been placed under a yellow alert. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 30-40 kmph and heavy rainfall at isolated places are likely across these districts over the next two days.
Meanwhile, large parts of Marathwada, Solapur, Sangli, the Kolhapur plains and the Satara plains remain under the green (no warning) category for Thursday, with light to moderate rainfall or no significant weather expected.
The IMD has warned that areas under red and orange alerts could experience localised flooding, waterlogging, traffic disruptions, uprooting of weak trees and possible lightning strikes. Citizens have been advised to avoid low-lying areas, stay away from weak structures and follow official IMD advisories.
