The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations during the day.

The weather office has warned that intense monsoon activity is likely to persist over the city through the weekend, with heavy rainfall expected to continue into early next week.

According to the IMD's district-wise forecast issued at 1 pm, Mumbai is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with isolated extremely heavy spells on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The intensity is expected to ease marginally on Sunday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast at a few places, before reducing to heavy rainfall at a few locations on Monday. The weather agency has advised residents to remain cautious as active monsoon conditions continue over the Konkan coast.

Neighbouring districts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are also expected to witness widespread rainfall over the coming days.

Thane has also been placed under an orange alert, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by isolated extremely heavy spells from Thursday to Saturday. On Sunday, rainfall activity is expected to become more widespread, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at many places across the district. Heavy rainfall at a few places has been forecast for Monday.

Raigad is also under an orange alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy showers likely from Thursday through Sunday. The district is expected to continue receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on Monday, making it one of the districts likely to witness prolonged heavy monsoon activity.

Palghar under red alert; IMD forecasts widespread heavy rainfall across Maharashtra

Palghar has been placed under a red alert, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall from Thursday through Sunday. The intensity is expected to ease on Monday, when heavy rainfall is likely at a few places.

Elsewhere in Maharashtra, the IMD has forecast continued heavy rainfall over the Konkan region, including Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, while the ghat areas of Nashik, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy spells at some locations over the next few days. Interior districts across north Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 30-50 kmph and light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast in several districts.

The IMD has warned that the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, localised flooding, disruption to road, rail and air transport, landslides in vulnerable hilly regions, rough sea conditions along the Konkan coast and damage to standing crops. People have been advised to follow weather updates and exercise caution while travelling during periods of intense rainfall.
