The Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday in view of a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The order was issued by District Collector Dr Indu Rani Jakhad, who is also the chairperson of Palghar's District Disaster Management Authority.
According to the official order issued on Wednesday, the decision was taken after reviewing the IMD's forecast and the prevailing weather conditions in the district. All types of educational institutions - including anganwadis, government and private primary and secondary schools, zilla parishad schools, municipal schools, aided and unaided schools, ashram schools, colleges, and vocational training centres - will remain closed on Thursday.
However, all principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff have been instructed to report to duty during regular working hours and assist the local administration in disaster management activities as per requirements.
The order has been issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and relevant government resolutions empowering the district collector to declare school holidays in emergency situations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy rainfall for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.
The weather alert mentioned, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places was likely on July 1."
Heavy showers continued across several parts of Mumbai through Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai witnessed substantial rainfall on Tuesday, June 30. Between 8 am and 10 pm, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 64.85 mm, while the eastern suburbs received 76.69 mm, the highest among the three regions. Meanwhile, the western suburbs recorded an average of 70.30 mm during the same period.
Meanwhile, the weather bureau issued a red alert for Ratnagiri district, stating, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places."
A yellow alert was issued for Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Akola, Buldhana, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal.
