Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) on Wednesday has announced a new partnership with the Department of Posts (India Post), Maharashtra Circle, to carry out door-to-door domestic gas meter readings across Mumbai, an official statement said.
The service will begin with a pilot project in South Mumbai before being expanded to other parts of the city in phases.
According to MGL, it is the first City Gas Distribution (CGD) company in India to partner with India Post for domestic gas meter reading services.
Under the agreement, uniformed India Post officials will visit MGL customers' homes to record Piped Natural Gas (PNG) meter readings.
The officials will use a dedicated mobile application to capture the reading, along with a photograph of the gas meter for verification.
The information will then be sent directly to MGL's systems through an Application Programming Interface (API), ensuring accuracy and complete digital tracking.
Officials will only visit households listed in the customer database provided by MGL.
MGL said the programme will make maximum possible use of women postal employees for household visits.
The company said this decision is aimed at increasing customer confidence and making residents more comfortable during home visits.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on July 7, 2026 by representatives of MGL and India Post.
MGL Managing Director Praveer Kumar Srivastava said the partnership combines India Post's trusted doorstep presence with MGL's digital systems to make gas meter reading more accurate, transparent and efficient.
He said starting with South Mumbai would help the company assess the system before introducing it across its customer network.
India Post said the partnership will also create an additional source of revenue outside its traditional postal services.
Postal employees involved in the programme will receive an incentive for every successful household meter reading they complete.
Officials said the initiative makes use of India Post's extensive last-mile delivery network while providing customers with a reliable service.
Following the South Mumbai pilot, MGL and India Post will jointly review the project's performance.
The review will focus on accuracy of meter readings, customer experience, coverage of households and operational efficiency.
If successful, the service will be extended to other parts of Mumbai and later to other areas served by MGL, officials said.
