A family shopping trip turned fatal when a car allegedly rammed their vehicle from behind. Iyyappan Selvaraj Harijan, 41, was riding towards Bandra with his wife, Nancy Harijan, 37, both residents of Santacruz, when their scooter was allegedly hit by a high-speed car in Khar West. The accident occurred at around 4.32 pm on Monday.
According to Nancy, she was thrown onto the road while her husband was trapped underneath the car, with only his leg visible. Bystanders had to lift the vehicle to pull him out.
According to Nancy's statement to the police, they had reached the CD Road - 16th Road junction in Khar West, when a white car allegedly came speeding from behind and rammed their scooter. The same car then allegedly hit another scooter, throwing its rider onto the road. The couple was taken to Bhabha Hospital in an autorickshaw, where Nancy was treated for injuries to her left hand and other parts of her body; however, Iyyappan was declared dead by the doctors after a short while.
The second scooter rider was identified as Rahul Ghanekar, who suffered a fracture to one hand, according to Nancy's statement.
Police have identified the car driver as Sudhir Sitaram Sawant, 71. Sawant was allegedly driving at high speed when he rammed the motorcycle from behind before hitting the second scooter. Khar police have booked Sawant under BNS sections related to causing death by negligence, causing hurt, causing property damage, and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act describing rash driving on public ways and dangerous driving. Senior police officials confirmed to mid-day that Sawant has not been arrested and has been served a notice in connection with the case.
