There is nothing quite like a mother's home-cooked meal. Within each dish lies a mixture of skill, patience, and adoration. Now, through the efforts of Cooked by Moms (CBM), that impeccable taste holds a greater initiative that can empower Indian women.

CBM is a social enterprise that works with local NGOs to employ mothers from struggling backgrounds. At The Great Bombay Thaali pop-up, hosted by Colaba restaurant Bombay Vintage, CBM and the NGO Seva Sadan Society will collaborate to serve lunch to support the economic and emotional well-being of women. But the journey doesn't stop at cooking. "We also get the women to serve and interact with the customers. When they do that, it builds their confidence," explains Namrata Tanna, founder of CBM. The super mom cooks will be whipping up a trio of Gujarati, Maharashtrian and Parsi cuisines.

"The women who serve and cook the food use their home recipes. Bombay Vintage is inspired by home-style cooking, so we thought it would be a great collaboration," affirms Sumitraj Gambhir, co-owner of the restaurant. Tanna elaborates, "We showcase the city's specialties, and Mumbai is such a multicultural city and we want to represent this."

For vegetarians, the thali features scrumptious options such as kothimbir vadi, sukha aloo sabzi, and paneer bhurji. The non-veg version includes mutton cutlet, salli chicken and methi thepla. "We want [the women] to be the stars of this event. It's not about us, it's about them," Tanna sums up.
