Riding on spirited performances from captain Shireen, Smriti R and the experience Manisha Dange, Maharashtra’s eves pulled off an upset victory over defending champions Southern Railway in the opening women’s league match of the Rs 4 lakh prize money 8th Savio Cup All-India basketball tournament, sponsored by Tridhatu Realty India and United Phosphorous Ltd at Don Bosco (Matunga) yesterday.

Leading throughout the game, Maharashtra had a slight scare in the last quarter when Southern Railway leveled things at 61-61 and then took a point’s lead through the experienced Geetu Anna Jose. But that situation was shortlived and the spirited Maharashtra girls stepped on the pedal once again to emerge comfortable 80-69 winners. Manisha emerged the top scorer for Maharashtra with 24 points, followed by Smriti R with 17 points and Shireen with 12. For Southern Railway, Geetu finished with an impressive 34 points.
