A threatening hoax call claiming an attack on two south Mumbai's luxury hotels, Taj Mahal Palace and Trident, in Colaba was made by a man following which the police have detained a suspect.
According to the police, the call was made at around 9:30 pm on Tuesday following which the police began to trace the culprit.
Sources said that the security was beefed up and a team of police officials began to trace the whereabouts of the caller.
The police said that the suspect was later detained.
"The detained individual has been identified as Santosh Subhrao Sawant, 42, who works in housekeeping and resides at Bhinarkarwadi at Sector 15 of New Panvel in Navi Mumbai," said an official, adding that the man was detained and brought to the Colaba police station for further investigations.
A non-cognizable offence has been registered against the suspect at Colaba Police station, he said.
Initial checks did not reveal any suspicious activity. The police carried out inspections as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety, sources said.
Police officials are investigating the caller's background. "He was being questioned," Mumbai Police DCP, Zone 1, Pravin Mundhe said.
