The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday ordered a probe into the Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road project site accident in which two people lost their lives.
An official statement said that an immediate and detailed inquiry into the accident at the Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road casting yard has been launched.
Two workers were killed after a platform collapsed on them. The incident took place in Bhayandar (West), raising fresh concerns over safety at large infrastructure construction sites in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The statement said that the investigation will be thorough and impartial, and strict action will be taken if any lapses in worker safety are found.
To ensure a fair and technical assessment, the BMC has appointed a team of experts from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), the statement said.
The expert panel has been asked to conduct a prompt investigation and submit a factual and evidence-based report. Based on its findings, action will be taken against the concerned contractors if any violations are identified, it said.
The Mumbai civic body said that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for worker safety are already in place at construction sites.
The inquiry will examine whether these safety protocols were properly followed at the DBLR site. Any breach of rules will lead to strict and punitive action against those responsible.
The BMC reiterated that it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards negligence in worker safety.
With large-scale infrastructure projects underway across Mumbai, officials stressed that no compromise will be accepted when it comes to protecting workers at construction sites.
In response to the incident, the civic body has decided to carry out fresh third-party inspections of all major equipment, including gantries, cranes and other machinery.
Regular safety audits will also be conducted more strictly to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The BMC said that a robust, worksite-based safety system will be made mandatory across all packages of the coastal road project stretching from Versova to Bhayandar.
An independent expert agency will be appointed to carry out comprehensive safety reviews and re-evaluate existing protocols. Immediate corrective measures will be taken if any deficiencies are found, the statement said.
