A routine night at Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai's Ghatkopar, turned into a heart-wrenching sight and an emergency response after a newborn baby boy was found abandoned on the bathroom floor. The infant's continuous cries alerted nearby people, leading to a swift life-saving rescue operation, reported IANS.
A distressed young man, Vishnu Shriram Patel, first informed the police after hearing the cries from the hospital bathroom located outside Ward No. 40.
As per reports, he told officials that a newborn baby was "lying inside the bathroom and crying continuously."
Police Constable Jitendra Vishnu Patil, posted at Tilak Nagar Police Station, was on duty at the hospital's casualty department on the night of May 25 when he received the alert around 9 pm, as per IANS.
He immediately rushed to the location and found a newborn male infant lying helplessly on the cold bathroom floor.
Hospital nurses were called without delay and with the help of nursing staff and the person who raised the alarm, the baby was rescued, cleaned and shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Doctors later confirmed that the infant's life was saved due to timely medical intervention and said his condition is stable, as per the news agency.
As per reports, preliminary checks by police revealed that there was no record in hospital registers of any delivery taking place during that period.
Based on this, investigators suspect that an unidentified woman may have delivered the baby inside the hospital bathroom and abandoned him before leaving the premises.
The Tilak Nagar Police have registered a case against an unidentified woman and launched a search operation. CCTV footage from different parts of Rajawadi Hospital is being examined to trace the person responsible for abandoning the newborn.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and teams are actively working to identify and locate the woman, reported the news agency.
At present, the newborn remains under close medical supervision in the NICU and is reported to be safe and stable. Police continue efforts to trace the absconding woman and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
