Continuous heavy rainfall has severely affected rail operations in the Vasai-Virar belt, with waterlogging reported across key sections including Saphale, Kelve Road, Vasai Road and Nallasopara stations.
Suburban train services on Vasai Road and Virar stations have been temporarily suspended. Passengers are advised to anticipate delays of around 15-20 minutes in local train operations across the Vasai section.
According to Western Railway, several long-distance and suburban train services in the Mumbai division have been short-terminated, diverted or cancelled due to rising water levels on tracks.
Multiple trains including the Azamgarh-BDTS, Surat-Virar, Ahmedabad-BDTS and Jodhpur-BDTS services have been short-terminated at intermediate stations such as Sanjan, Vapi, Valsad and Umargam Road. Several services have also been reversed or rescheduled.
Suburban operations on the Borivali-Virar stretch have been partially suspended, with trains short-terminated at Virar due to severe waterlogging between stations.
Key MEMU services, including Dahanu Road-Borivali and Borivali-Valsad, have also been cancelled or partially operated due to unsafe track conditions.
Western Railway has urged commuters to check live train updates before travel and avoid unnecessary movement until conditions improve. Officials said restoration work is underway, but continued rainfall is hampering operations.
At Virar station, authorities have arranged distribution of water, tea and biscuits for stranded passengers as a large number of commuters faced delays and cancellations.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, with services expected to remain disrupted until water levels recede in low-lying railway sections.
The Mumbai suburban network continues to face intermittent disruptions as the monsoon intensifies across the Vasai-Virar corridor.
Several parts of Vasai, including Vasai East, and other parts in Vasai West are flooded waist-deep in water. While people aren't leaving their houses, many office-goers have opted to work from home. Vasai resident Joynel Vaz shares, "It has been raining non-stop, winds strong enough to turn umbrellas inside out, branches of trees falling everywhere. I went out yesterday, and the Gass road was flooded. There was also no electricity for a long time, and even the internet was down. We have the option of working from home, so I did not go to work today because it would take me two hours to reach my workplace. Work-from-home is a better alternative in the monsoon season. My friend who lives in Anand Nagar is staying at his cousin's place because his house is submerged."
Another resident, Manjeet, told mid-day.com, "Due to continuous heavy rainfall and strong winds, several areas between Virar West's Global City and the Virar railway station have witnessed severe waterlogging."
Train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune railway route were disrupted on Monday after continuous heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala section, affecting movement on all three railway lines, officials said.
According to Central Railway officials, a landslide was reported near Thakurwadi in the Bhor Ghat section. Another landslide occurred on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3:05 am.
Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, told PTI that the landslides forced authorities to suspend operations and regulate several train services.
"Due to incessant heavy rainfall in the South East Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, a landslide occurred between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill Loop Cabin on the Up Main Line of Mumbai Division," Nila told PTI.
