Sleep is one of the most important factors that decide the well-being of any person. The amount of sleep you get can directly affect your health. While you may already know that getting ample sleep is good for the body and brain, what you may not know is that the amount of sleep you have is just as important as how you sleep.
The study published in Journal of Neuroscience suggests that the side-sleeping position may boost clearance of waste from the brain. The human brain is the most metabolically active organ in the body. Over the course of the day, beta-amyloid and tau proteins accumulate inside the brain, which then build up clutter and can have serious long-term ill effects on the brain. They increase risk of development of serious neurological and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s in the future.
A team of US researchers analyzed different sleeping postures. They used dynamic contrast magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brain’s glymphatic pathway. The glymphatic system is responsible for cleansing the brain by flushing out waste products from the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. This pathway is designed in such a way that it works better under certain conditions.
Researchers suggest that the glymphatic system clears waste better when you are asleep than when you are awake. Researchers analyzed quality of sleep and performance of the glymphatic pathway in rats sleeping on their stomachs, back and sides and found that their glymphatic transport was most efficient when they slept sideways as compared with other two positions.
So, start sleeping on your sides if you wish to keep your brain healthy. After all, your brain goes through a lot over the course of each day.
