A 19-year-old sailor allegedly committed suicide at INS Shivaji, the Indian Navy's base near Lonavala in Pune district, on Wednesday, police said. Akash Sainath Kannala was found to have hanged himself from ceiling fan by using a bedsheet at a recreation center on the base around 4.30 am, a police official said. No suicide note was found on the spot, and the Navy has ordered an inquiry, he said.


A case of death has been reported with Lonavala police and they are probing the case. According to police, "Akash was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the early hours of Wednesday at the establishment. His course had commenced in March 2019. The sailor hailed from Pardi in Nirmal district of Telangana. He is survived by his parents and two siblings."


A press statement issued by the Defence confirmed the incident and mentioned that, "in this regard First Information Report (FIR) has been registered with the local police as well as the Navy has also ordered an inquiry into the tragic incident and probing the case."


Kannala, who was undergoing Direct Entry Engineering Mechanics course, hailed from Pardi village in Nirmal district of Telangana, the police official said. Lonavala police are conducting further probe, he added.
